Lead Poisoning from Jewelry

Love that new piercing that you just received. Well, be careful! Studies have apparently shown that body piercings can not only be harmful because of introducing infection into the body, but if not made from the right material you can also suffer lead poisoning.

In fact, so dangerous can this be that the California State are actually requiring, by law, that jewelry sold particularly for use in body piercing must have less than six percent lead. This went into effect in August, 2009. Fines of up to $2,500 day for each piece the sellers possess are now going to be implemented.

Jewelry with lead, especially fashion jewelry, is coming under increasing scrutiny as more and more cases of lead poisoning from jewelry have been coming to light. Symptoms of lead poisoning can ultimately lead to seizures, organ failure and even death!

So if you are thinking of buying fashion jewelry, particularly anything that is inserted into your body, make sure that it is lead free, or at the very least that it contains very low levels of lead before going ahead with your piercing.
